Since 1978, Nike Women has been a focus for the brand, helping to push women’s athletics to new levels. In 1984, Joan Benoit Samuelson became the first women’s marathon gold medalist after the IOC finally relented and added long-distance running events for female athletes. The explosion of basketball in the 90s led to the brand signing another trailblazer, Sheryl Swoopes, to their roster. A champion and All-time great at all levels of competition, Swoopes was only the second athlete to have a signature shoe with the brand, after Michael Jordan. The brand continues to be a platform for women, with campaigns like “The Force is Female” showing appreciation for how women’s streetwear have adopted the iconic AF1 silhouette.
